Red is a lively action film based on a more serious graphic novel, featuring roles for renowned actors Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, and the formidable Helen Mirren, whose inclusion alone makes the movie worth watching. Mary-Louise Parker's performance as Frank's unsuspecting civilian date adds another layer of excitement, while Brian Cox brings a comedic touch as Frank's former Soviet adversary. Karl Urban's portrayal of the current CIA agent adds further tension to the plot. The film's breezy tone may downplay the serious story at the plot's core and the mounting body count, but director Robert Schwentke skillfully keeps the action and plot moving at a fitting speed.
